Keep Your Oven Running Like New: Simple Maintenance Tips

Share

Your oven is one of the hardest-working appliances in your kitchen. A little regular care can keep it heating evenly, smelling fresh, and lasting for years longer than a neglected unit.

1. Wipe Spills Before They Bake On

The easiest way to avoid burnt-on grime is to clean spills as soon as the oven cools. Use a damp cloth and a little dish soap. Avoid abrasive pads that can damage the interior finish.

2. Deep Clean Without Damaging the Finish

If your oven is heavily soiled, remove the racks and soak them in warm soapy water. For the interior, use a non-abrasive oven cleaner or a paste of baking soda and water. Let it sit, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.

3. Check the Door Gasket

The rubber gasket around the door keeps heat inside. If it is cracked, torn, or flattened, heat escapes and cooking times increase. Run your fingers gently around the seal to check for damage and replace it if needed.

4. Avoid Foil on the Oven Floor

Lining the bottom with foil can block airflow and damage the enamel. Instead, use a baking sheet on a lower rack to catch drips when cooking especially messy dishes.

5. Test Oven Temperature Accuracy

If food is consistently undercooked or overcooked, place an inexpensive oven thermometer inside and compare its reading to the set temperature. A significant difference may mean you need a professional calibration.

When to Call a Professional

  • Oven takes a very long time to heat
  • Burner or bake element will not glow or ignite
  • You smell gas or see scorch marks around the door

At the first sign of trouble, turn the oven off and schedule a professional inspection. Catching issues early is cheaper and safer than waiting for a complete breakdown.
